Founded in 1886, Johnson & Johnson is a renowned American consumer packaged goods, multinational medical devices, and pharmaceutical manufacturer. Its headquarters is directly adjacent the Rutgers University campus in New Jersey, USA.
Listed as a fortune 500 company (Fortune, 2016), the corporation includes up to 250 subsidiary companies, has operations in over 60 companies, and a variety of products being sold in about 175 countries. 40% of the company’s revenues are generated outside the US. In the year 2015 alone, Johnson & Johnson sold over $70.1 billion worth of products worldwide (Johnson & Johnson, 2015).
The Johnson & Johnson brand has been associated with a lot of household names of first aid supplies and medications. Chief amongst them are well-known consumer products including Johnson’s baby products, Tylenol medications, clean and clear facial wash, Neutrogena skin and beauty products, Band-Aid (the brand line of bandages), as well as Acuvue contact lenses.
Being one of the world’s largest and most diversified healthcare firms, the structure of the company has been duly maintained via a host of acquisitions and mergers. Johnson & Johnson is finely divided into three major divisions (Johnson & Johnson, 2016).
• Pharmaceuticals division.
Each of these divisions boast of a substantial amount of sub-divisions, and out of the total revenue of the company, they each contributed 19.3%, 35.9%, and 44.9% respectively, in 2015.
Generally, the pharmaceutical segment generates up to 58% of the company’s operating profits and 47% of its revenues; the medical device segment accounts for 31% of operating profits and 36% of revenue; while the consumer healthcare segment contributes 11% of the operating profits and 17% of revenues.
Drugs for mental illness, family planning, gastroenterology, allergies, nervous system diseases, immunotherapy, oncology, pain management, cardiovascular diseases, and other areas are included in the pharmaceutical products of the company. Those of the medical devices segment include...
