System of management functions

Firstly, let’s go into the meaning of the term management functions. At the very beginning of management development Frederick W. Taylor1 distinguished functions of management, but he analyzed management work at whole, but didn’t analyze process. In contrast, today’s understanding of functions differs as they are seen as the steps of manager cycle process. Many people plan their activity for a day (month/year) and organize resourses that are needed to reach set goals. Later compare results with set tasks. Such work activities cover the whole management process.
That’s why management is not an activity that exists in its own right. It is rather a description of a variety of activities carried out by those memebers of organizations whose role is that of a manager ie someone who has formal responsibility for the work of at least one other person in organization. The activities carried out by managers are called functions.a cycle consisting of a range of activities called functions. (Description from G.A. Cole2).
Now I would like to sum up. To my mind management is creative problem solving that is accomplished through a range of cyclical activities, that are caled functions.
The first who defined management functions closer to modern concept was Henry Fayol3. He distinguished 5 management functions: Deciding/planning, Organizing, Commanding, Coordinating, Controlling.

Description
Deciding/planning
Includes the recognition of objectives and the development of programmes to achieve them
Organizing
Determines the appropriate machines, material, and human mix necessary to accomplish the planned courses of action.
Commanding
This means the giving of orders and instructions.
Coordinating
Includes activities that bind together all individual efforts and direct them toward a common objective
Controlling
This means ensuring that actual activities are consistent with plans.
Henry Fayol was of course writing at a time when work was mechanistic in nature and planning and specialisation was not only the norm, but desirable. The market...
