Eszterházy Károly College English Department Essay Three main steps how to choose successfully one’s career (subject: essay writing) Lecturer: Peter Dolmányos Eger, 2006 Nowadays in the age of material values choosing a job is an inevitable stage, which every person has to go through in his/her lifetime. Some time ago career choices did not cause a lot of difficulties, however, today, when “there is infinitely more to choose from and the levels of expectation are rising” (Shale Paul “The top 10 steps for choosing a career”), they seem to be problematic as never ever. What is more, as the chosen job plays an important role in laying the foundations for a person’s better future, everyone is extremely motivated to choose the one that is right particularly for them. In order to choose successfully one’s career, every person has to follow three main steps: to examine oneself by taking into consideration one’s values, skills, talents and preferences, to have a look at the career options such as required qualifications, qualities and the surrounding people in a possible work field and make a good decision by asking other people’s opinion. Self-awareness helps to understand one’s strengths and weaknesses and discover a promising career1. A lot of people feel unhappy and burned out in their lives just because the chosen careers do not suit their personalities2. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to identify one’s values before going for a particular job3. When a person recognizes his/her values, that is, when he/she really knows what is the most important to him/her, what turns him/her on and what he/she likes to do so much that there is even no need to get any reward for it, he/she very easily gets the idea what kind of job is the most suitable for him/her4. Besides, as “values are the emotional anchor of all that a person does”, it is more likely that “a high correspondence between one’s personal values and the work” will bring both ethical and moral satisfaction too5. Furthermore, some people who are skilled at their jobs, that is, they are taught to do it well, most often fail to find it interesting while others who are qualified to do the work from the birth are extremely excited6. Thus, it is much better when a person chooses a job that involves more his/her talents rather than skills, because in such a way he/she is definitely inclined to enjoy and succeed in what he/she is doing7. Moreover, as every person approaches the world with certain individual preferences, which operate at a subconscious level and can not be controlled on purpose or distracted in any way, they clearly show not only a person’s character qualities but also the kind of work that is right particularly for him/her8. For example, if a person enjoys constructing big projects and working with other people, he/she should go by this and make a career in engineering, aviation or architecture9. Knowing clearly options of a future career reveals where the job is actually heading and keeps a person from failure10. Sometimes people discover that they have chosen the wrong job, because their career, which used to be so pleasing, is no longer satisfactory, and the main reason for it is that the activities and actual content of the job become hardly bearable11. So happens usually when the chosen career’s options are not analyzed comprehensively12. In order to do this it is not enough to find out the required qualifications and have the necessary qualities13. The most important is to be acquainted with the people a person will have to work with every single working day14. For example, when a person has to do the job with miserable and constantly complaining colleagues, he/she loses his/her good spirits, and this inevitably results in the decline of inspiration to do the best in the work field15. Moreover, when the employer’s expectations and requirements go beyond all reason, a person is unable to develop his/her talents, abilities and feel his/her contributions being not appreciated at all16. Therefore, that person begins to think mistakenly that he/she has entered the wrong career and throws himself/herself into other kinds of work in which he/she is not likely to succeed17. However, it is very important to be sure that the unhappiness, which the person feels being at the job, is more due to the actions of the surrounding people rather than it is inside him/her18. Otherwise, he/she really has entered the wrong career19. Asking for the opinion of other people helps to inject reality and clarity into making a good decision about the most suitable career20. “Nearly every career looks vastly different from the outside than from within”21. Therefore, it is more important to find out what the chosen job is like in practice rather than to read about it as much as it is possible22. One of the best ways to do this is to go and talk to people who are actually working in that chosen career area, because only in such a way people are able to test out whether the job really fits their values, preferences and is right particularly for them23. Another important thing in making a right decision is having a discussion with close people24. A person’s family members and friends are the people who know him/her best and who are likely to be the most honest in the whole world25. Thus, they can easily advise him/her which type of a career is the most advantageous for him/her to enter in26. Summing up, every person wants to have a job that would make him/her get up every morning with a smile on the face. However, in order to achieve this, it is necessary to choose the career that is right particularly for them, and one of the best ways to do it is to examine oneself by taking into consideration one’s values, skills, talents and preferences, to have a look at the career options such as required qualifications, qualities and the surrounding people in a possible job and make a good decision by asking other people’s opinion before going into a certain work field. Therefore, we, the future employees of one or another career, should take the time now and start following the mentioned steps in order that our emotional and material life would be much better and satisfying enough.
