I have always known from my own experience that there are too much different students in one classroom and that it is very important to find individual approaches for everyone, however, I did know how to do this. Therefore, I was extremely motivated to find out the most successful ways of doing it. So in this short essay I am going discuss those ways of differentiating learners in order their individual needs would be recognized and managed. What is more, I am going even to prove that it is absolutely necessary to give different tasks and homework, organize diverse pattern activities, carry out unlike evaluation and provide different support for students, if teachers want them to make progress in learning.
All over the world there are classrooms of mixed ability learners. Though students differ in many ways, e.g. some are confident, quick and willing to cooperate with the surrounding people while others are shy, slow and prefer working alone, they all have an inborn need to learn. However, as many teachers tend to ignore these differences and keep teaching everyone in the same way, a lot of students just fail to be ‘successful learners’ and suppress their desire for knowledge (Littlejohn Andrew “Mixed Ability Classes”, Macdonald Karin “Teaching Techniques”: “Mixed Ability Teaching”, 2006 03 20). Therefore, every teacher’s responsibility is to differentiate students by giving different tasks and homework, organizing diverse pattern activities, carrying out unlike evaluation and providing different support in order their individual needs would be recognized and managed (Rees Gareth “Teaching English”, Tomlinson & Carol Ann “Differentiating Instruction for Advanced Learners in the Mixed-Ability School Classroom”).
