INTRODUCTION to the Victorian LITERATURE
The term “Victorian age” is named for Queen Victoria who ruled from 1837 until her death in 1901. In England and the Nineteenth Century, David Thomson describes the Victorian age as “one of strenuous activity and dynamic change, of ferment of ideas and recurrent social interest of great inventiveness and expansion.” (Abrams, 918, 1991) And Queen Victoria remains a remarkable figure in history – not only for having been the longest reigning British monarch, but also as the figurehead of a vast empire, and as the inspiration for a highly complex culture.
Historians often record Victorian age as a period of many contradictions. Much more dubious is the use of Victorian to characterize the British spirit during this era. The later 20th century has tended to see Victorianism as moral earnestness, astounding material progress, confidence, and a serenity strange to our troubled times. In fact, the Victorian age was an era of extraordinary complexity and variety of viewpoint, as its writers demonstrate.
