The feminine dimension in American literature presented by Kate Chopin

Kate Chopin may be considered one of the most individual and adventurous nineteenth-century feminine American writers that focused mainly on feminine characters that dared to challenge the existing conventions which imprisoned the woman in the life that was considered to belong to men. Americans of the 19th century generally believed that there was a definite difference in character between the sexes - man was active, dominant, assertive, and materialistic, while woman was religious, modest, passive, submissive, and domestic. The belief in the free moral agency of the individual, the capacity to exercise choice and determine one’s own fate was also in the charge of men, while a woman was a socially restricted figure that stood in the shade of male society. What is more, it was man that occupied the central position in the public life and literature so that is why the literature of the 19th century America was called the literature without women. Kate Chopin, in turn, was among the first to place the female characters in the central position of the literary works and their plot. As if challenging to the masculine superiority, Chopin presents female heroines that fight for their occupational, emotional and sexual independence against a patriarchic society that expects women to stay within their roles of wife and mother. In the time when the marriage and motherhood were supposed to provide lifelong companionship and submission of a woman, her heroines rejected their domestic role and passionately looked for spiritual, sexual and artistic freedom. This search for liberty and independence of her characters was met like a challenge in the times when the woman was considered to be a passionless, pure and spiritual creature belonging to her husband and her children.
