Characters and settings in Kate Chopin’s "The storm"

The essay analyses one of American writer’s Kate Chopin’s short stories, which was written in the early 20th century. However it was published just decades after the author’s death. Kate Chopin is well known of her feministic ideas that she declared in her writings. The story “The Storm” is unique not only of its plot and content but it is a sample in the American literature of its symbolic setting.
Kate Chopin’s story “The Storm” is provocative and conventional at the same time. It was easy and interesting to read “The Storm”. Author doesn’t use sophisticated phrases neither describes mysterious settings. The language of the story is casual and the characters of the story are undistinguished people.
At the first sight it looks as the characters are picked from the author’s background that she knew very well. However, their decisions and actions might appear very extraordinary for some reader, meanwhile, others won’t see anything exceptional. The issue of faithfulness in the family life won’t let anyone to remain indifferent.
Chopin introduces five characters in the story. Meanwhile two of them: Calixta and Alcee are the main ones and the other: Bobinot, the husband to Calixta, and four year old Bibi, the son of hers, are peripheral ones. There is also mentioned Clarisse, wife to Alcee Laballiere, but she is not described extensively in the story. It is only mentioned to tell the reader that Alcee has obligations to his wife and he is not the bachelor hunting for the wives who are left at home alone.
Chopin depicts Calixta as a dedicated housewife and mother, such role of woman was accepted in the early twentieth century. In the very beginning of the story when the reader meets Calixta she perfectly testifies this homemaker image “she is sewing furiously on a sewing machine” (Chopin,97). Later...
