The definition of advertising is complex. When analysing its concept, we find the issues of economics, sociology, psychology and aesthetics intertwined. Effective usage of advertising requires the knowledge of its nature and functioning mechanism in modern economy.
Advertising is defined as an economic category. When used in a well-planned way as a means of information, advertising becomes a medium between the areas of production, circulation and consumption, and between the supply and demand of goods.
Nowadays advertising has become a necessary attribute of our life. We cannot imagine existence of not only trade and service provision but also many economic areas without advertising.
Advertising can be defined as brief information with some emotional colouring aimed at prospective buyers to encourage them to perform different actions related to purchasing goods and services. Advertising is realized on the basis of mutual interests of the advertiser, consumer and society. It makes the choice of goods easier for the consumer and has a purposeful impact on individual buyers as well as wider groups of consumers. Advertising also helps to form interests, cutoms, attitudes and to overcome mistakes and superstitions and serves cultural, political, moral and aesthetic development of people.
It is also related to forming public opinion. Advertising is a multifunctional activity and it could be aimed at achieving a wide range of purposes. Through application of a system of various methods and means, commercial advertising aims at providing the public with objective information about goods, their specifications, purpose and usage as well as commercial firms, shops, forms and methods of sale and customer service.
