Freedom of the Baltic states.
The 20 th century became known as rather dramatic to Lithuanians. After the 120 years of occupation by the Russian empire, by the volition of the whole Lithuanian nation, the independent Republic of Lithuania was established on 16 February 1918.
On 23 August 1939, the signatares of Molotov- Ribbentrop was realized determination of the two dictators- Stalin and Hitler- to occupy several East European states, including Lithuania. On 23 August 1979, after 40 years since the secret protocols of the Pact had been signed, for the first time, about several tens of activists on human rights and ordinary citizens from the Baltic states and Russia approved the letter- appeal ( Baltic Memorandum) prepared by the members of Lithuania Freedom League Antanas Terleckas and Julius Sasnauskas and addressed to the United Nations and to the countries, signatories of Atlantic Charter, to liquidate the consequences of the Molotov- Ribbentrop Pact and restore independence of the Baltic states.
The Memorandum received a wide responce in the whole world. On this occasion, politics and a lot of democretic countries once more stressed that indifference to the destinies of the subjugated people and non- denuncation position in regard to any kind of annexation was a crime itself. In responce to these moods, the Soviet Union activated the KGB repressions in Lithuania and Estonia. The initiators of the memorandum Antanas Terleckas and Julius Sasnauskas were arrested and accused of „ anti- Soviet activism and propaganda“. Almost all the dissidents who had supported the Memorandumo f the Baltic nationals were either arrested, deported or emigrated.
The Baltic memorandum was the first protest to receive a wide international responce. In December 1979, the diplomatic representative of Lithuania in Washington, Stasys Bačkis, together with the diplomatic representatives of Estonia and Latvia submitted the memorandum to the United Nations...
