English names and their origins

In this practical research we wanted to group first English names from dictionary “ Slovar anglijskij licnyh imion “ ( 1973 ) according to their origin. 3000 first English names are presented in this dictionary. Only 1262 ( 42 % ) of them are full or initial names. All others English names are variants or derivatives of full names. We were interested in the origin of full English names. We distributed all full names into seven main what names contain to their meanings. We can see what names contain major parts in this dictionary from the first table.

As we can see, names which indicate the place or time of birth from the biggest part ( 21% ) of first English names in this dictionary. Names which indicate the profession or duty ( 19% ) , the streaks of character ( 17% ) and the objects of the names presented in this dictionary. Names which are connected with religion or belief ( 11% ) and names which indicate appearance ( 9% ) form the smallest part of the first English names. Names which express feeling ( 6% ) form the smallest part of all names presented in the dictionary.
