W. Somerset Maugham "The Moon And Sixpence". Charles Strickland's character sketch

Charles Strickland is the main character of Maugham's novel "The Moon And Sixpence". All the subject matter of this book is about his life, which was very exiting and thrilling. William Somerset Maugham tried to reveal the unique personality of this genius.
Strickland didn't look like a genius at all when the author first met him. Charles was a broad-shouldered and quite stout man; he had regular and a bit too large facial features; he also had short brown hair. Strickland was a mediocre about forty-aged man. But later when he didn't have what to eat he became much thinner and looked like as if he was a skeleton.
Sometimes you can say a lot about a person from his appearance. But Strickland was an exception. On the outside he looked like a simple stockbroker. But it would be foolish to think like that because Charles's personality was quite complicated.
Strickland completely ignored other people and what they think or talk about him. For instance, the teacher who taught him how to paint didn't like his works when Charles began to paint. But for Strickland it wasn't a problem. And he didn't stop painting and kept working.
Strickland also despises and doesn't care about all the people that surround him. He doesn't feel any sympathy to them. The best example is his attitude towards his wife and his children. Strickland explains to the author that he left his family because he didn't love them anymore. But this act only shows that the he cares only about him self. The friendship with captain Nichols also proves the same thing. The author mentions that Strickland might have been in friendship with the captain only because of the possibility to go to Tahiti.
