Charles Dickens "Great Expectations"

Consider “Great Expectations” as an overall work of art and also a vehicle of Dickens’s social message and come to a conclusion about how successful you think the book is on those two counts.
Charles Dickens is one of the greatest English classics. His popularity could be compared to Shakespeare’s. In his works the author reflects the post Industrial Revolution England. At the time England’s population was subdivided into different social classes. Poverty, illnesses and illiteracy were common. These themes become important for Dickens and he based one of his famous book “Great Expectations” on them. It is a bildungsroman which describes the transition of Pip, the main character, from boyhood to manhood. The author depicts this journey towards maturity and self-discovery as a painful one requiring self- criticism, discipline and innate kindness. C. Dickens creates a moving and a vivid story. His book became a piece of art popularising the writer’s name and it gave an opportunity for the author to express his discontent with the state, aristocracy and the institution of justice. In this essay I will try to explore the methods by which C. Dickens achieves his goals.
It would be hard to say to which genre “Great Expectations” belongs to as it is a mixture of different ones. The book is based on a tragedy of the protagonist called Pip. Pip is full of romantic and immature idealism. Therefore he is easily influenced and attracted by prosperity, luxury and high status in society. His innate boyish kindness disappears as soon as he hears that he has received a fortune from a secret benefactor. He turns away from his family, feels embarrassed by their appearance, dismisses his own social class and blindly falls into the ‘gentlemen’ way of life in London.
