Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, the son of John and Elizabeth Dickens. John Dickens was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office. He had a poor head for finances, and in 1824 found himself imprisoned for debt. He was the second child of a clerk in the Navy Pay Office. His childhood, like many of those portrayed in his novels, was not a particularly happy one. Between 1824 and 1827 Dickens was a day pupil at a school in London and at fifteen, he found employment as an office boy at an attorney’s, while he studied shorthand at night. In 1829 he became a free – lance reporter at Doctor’s Commons Courts, and in 1830 he met and fell in love with Maria Beadnell, the daughter of a Banker, but in 1833 his relationship ended, probably her parents did not think him a good match. By 1832 he had become a very successful shorthand reporter in the House of Commons, and began work as a reporter for a newspaper.
Dickens was one of the great literary geniuses of all time and one of the most popular. It can be argued that in all English literature, his creativity is rivaled only by Shakespeare’s. Dickens’s genius, his obsession with work, his life – long love affair with his public, and his deep humanity all helped to make him a literary phenomenon. Because his works appealed to people of all conditions, and because he could take advantage of new technological development. He published ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘David Copperfield’, ‘Hard Times’, ‘Bleak House’, ‘Little Dorrit’, ‘A Tale of Two Cities’, ‘Our Mutual Friends’ and other.
