The Anglo-Saxon period (Beowulf)

In Britain in olden days were no big cities, no highways or railways. Travelling through thick and dark woods and forest was very dangerous owing to the deep swamps and marshes. The people who lived on this islands were called Celts or Britons. In the 5th century other people came from the continent and after a long war conquered the Celts. They were the Angles, Saxons and Jutes.
What is more, the Angles, Saxons and Jutes brought their songs and poems from their homeland and that is why early Anglo-Saxon poetry often tells of events which took place on the continent. Nobody could read or write the, so traveling singers sang them to the villagers gathered round fires who listened with great interest. The poems were usually accompanied with music.
In addition, the greatest poem of old Anglo-Saxon poetry is The Song of Beowulf . It tells us of the times long before the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain. The whole poem was written down in the 10th century though parts of it were composed as far back as the 7th century. The manuscript is preserved in the British Museum, in London.
Beowulf is the name of the hero and the poem tells of his brave deeds. He is a young knight, strong as thirty men and his only wish is to defend people. Once the news of the horrible deeds of the monster who comes to the Denmark king’s palace, kills some of his soldiers and then returns to the marshes reaches Beowulf. He goes to Denmark and in the evening he remains on watch. In the middle of the night the monster breaks into the palace. Beowulf fights Grendel. The struggle is so furious that soon Grendel feels Beowulf’s strong hands and crawls away to the marshes to die. The king pours...
