Comparison of the fights of the three monsters in "Beowulf"

The epic poem “Beowulf” is known as the oldest of the great long poems written in English. It is the major literary monument of the English literature. ”Beowulf” is a story of heroes and monsters, good and evil. The poem tells about deeds of a legendary Geatish hero, prince Beowulf who comes to the Danish kingdom to fight three monsters: Grendel, Grendel’s mother and a dragon. He succeeds to slay two monsters: Grendel and Grendel’s mother, but the dragon finally kills Beowulf. This essay will look at the three great fights depicted in “Beowulf”. It will compare and contrast them.
The first difference between the three fights is the place where the fights occur. The first fight with Grendel occurs in Heorot. Grendel breaks into the hall one night and Beowulf kills him there. After killing Grendel, Beowulf fights with Grendel’s mother. This fight occurs in the dark moors, in the bottom of a lake where Grendel’s mother lives. The last fight against the dragon occurs in the place where he lives, in the barrow.
Secondly, there is a contrast of Beowulf’s age and fighting ability in the fights. When he fights against Grendel and Grendel’s mother, Beowulf is a young and strong warrior. Whereas later in the poem, when king of the Geats fights with the dragon, he is an old man, who is not as strong and fast as he was fifty years ago. He is:” old and steel gray” (The Norton Anthology of English literature, 71). This contrast is important, because it is the reason why Beowulf was killed by the dragon.
