INTRODUCTION
As part of the program of our Cultural Studies class, we have decided to present a country that still represents a vague idea if not the unknown to most of the occidental world though being part of the European Union since May 2004. This country is Lithuania, or more officially called The Republic of Lithuania. Our decision met that choice of country specially because one of the co-writers, who comes from Lithuania. Therefore, that will much more accredit our presentation as it is not only based on theory but also on a life-time experience.
To give you a first little idea on Lithuania, we are going to situate it geographically. Lithuania is located in the North-Eastern part of Europe and shares its borders with Kaliningrad Oblast (a region of Russia), Belarus, Latvia, Poland and with the Baltic Sea on its western side. It is commonly called a Baltic State as well as Latvia and Estonia, two other countries that were also annexed by the Soviet Union.
To make our presentation more relevant, we have decided to present Lithuania on the ground of one of the most important event in the history of the country: the independence of March 1990. From that day on, Lithuania was no longer under the yoke of the Soviet Union, officially called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and abbreviated to USSR, which was a communist area; and it became a republic. To give a clear overall overview on the subject, we have decided to divide our report in three parts.
In the first part, we will present the country under its both periods with key figures, and some general information.
