History and language of Lithuania

Over 2000 years BC the Baltic tribes occupied the lands of the current Baltic States.
The name of Lithuania was first mentioned in 1009 in the Quedlinburg chronicles.
The first and the only king of Lithuania – Mindaugas.
He was crowned in 1253.
About a hundred years later Duke Gediminas and his sons expanded Lithuania’s borders to the Black sea.
EARLY HISTORY
The Battle of Grunwald took place in 1410. It was a battle against the Teutonic Order.

Since Lithuania was occupied by Russia, in 1865 printed Lithuanian language was banned.

After World War I Lithuania gained independence but it didn’t last long.

In 1940 Lithuania was once again occupied by Soviet Union then the Nazi Germany. After that Soviet Union got Lithuania back into their hands. It lasted 45 years and ended in March 11, 1990.
