A short history of the capital of Lithuania Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania, with a population of nearly 500,000. It is also the administrative center of Vilnius County, and is located in the southeast part of the country.
Vilnius was first mentioned in written sources in 1323, when the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas signed a peace treaty with the Teutonic Knights. However, archaeological evidence shows that the area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, with the earliest settlers coming from the Baltic region. The city soon became an important trading center and a major political hub, thanks to its strategic position near the border with Russia.
