History of northern city of Lithuania - Biržai

 ►It is my pleasure to introduce my native town Biržai.
The region of Biržai lies in the far north of Lithuania, about 20 kilometers from the Lithuanian - Latvian border. If you cross the Nemunelis river you will appear in Latvia.
Birzai is located two hundred and fifteen kilometers north of Vilnius and 100 kilometers south of Latvia’s capital Riga.
This town was founded in 1455 and it is 550 year old. Biržai takes its name from the Lithuanian "biržė or beržas", which means glade or birch.
Biržai is home to about 17000 residents, the city is situated on the confluence of the Apaščia and Agluona rivers.
►Both Rivers were dammed in the 16th century, creating the beautiful 340-hectare Širvėna Lake just next to the town center. The oldest man-made lake in Lithuania, Širvėna is spanned by the nation's longest footbridge. I hope you can see it in the slide.
►As Birzai is northern part of Lithuania near this lake was ordered to build the castle to protect the northern border of Lithuania.
The legend says that after the war reconstruction of the castle was complicated. It was difficult to build the corner of the castle as it always collapsed. So it was decided that in that way the gods require for a sacrifice. Somebody said that there should be sacrificed a lucky person. Near by there was standing a church. And at that time there was going a just married happy couple. The couple was attacked, taken to the castle and cemented in to the castles wall.
It was said that there were seen the bridegrooms shoe and brides veil sticking out of the wall.
It may look unbelievable but the corner didn’t collapse any more and even after the war then the castle was destroyed again that corner left standing.
Now castle houses the Biržai regional museum...
