Ethnic minorities in Lithuania

Ethnic minorities now account for about 20 percent of the population of Lithuania. Around 109 different nationalities and ethnicities live in Lithuania, including Russians, Poles, Belorussians, Ukrainians, Jews, Tatars, Latvians, Gypsies, Germans, Armenians, Uzbeks, Azerbaijanis, Georgians, Estonians, Greeks and Hungarians. Russians comprise 8.2%, Poles – 6.9%, Belorussians – 1.5%, Ukrainians – 1.0%, Jews – 0.1%.[1] The greatest number of non-Lithuanians lives in eastern and southeastern part of Lithuania and in the cities of Vilnius, Klaipėda and Visaginas.
From the 14th century when first Tatars have arrived to Lithuania they have brought their own culture - language, tribe traditions, religion.
There are different reasons why Tatars have lost their language. Anyway now they use languages of neighboring nations - Lithuanian, Russian, and Polish. They use Muslim in their religious ceremonies. Muslim liturgical language is Arabian that is why Tatars have been writing their issues in Byelorussian later polish languages with Arabian letters.
Very interesting is ancient Tatar custom called "brotherhood" (between persons who are not from the same family).
With custom of sheep sacrifice people were calling change in weather - Tatars and Chistians used this custom as well. Most of ancient customs were based on ancient religion of Tiurk and Mongol tribes.
Certain religious customs were used to celebrate most important events of live - birth, marriage, death.
Name giving custom is called Azan. The priest comes into the house, guests are being invited too.
