Having a task to compare educational systems in such a variety of countries may not always be an easy task although at first sight you can see clear similarities between educational systems all around the world. But you have no other choice, but to agree with Anderson-Levitt (2005: 992- 993), who states that although any school on Earth might look alike, it is nothing similar when you look at it more closely. Despite the difficulties arising when approaching this topic, there are still similar patterns arising in educational systems all around the world.
First of all, every education system is based on pupils separated in classes, according to their age and sometimes their abilities. In most of Western countries children start school at an age of 5 to 7 years old and it is always obligatory to stay in school until one reaches certain age. Despite that, we had a very unique example of Colombia, in which school attendance is very poor and children start school at different ages, which already makes it much more difficult for teachers to start teaching children of the age range of at least 6 years, when they have different interests and a teacher needs to approach them in a different manner, while in the group of same-aged children there can be one type of approach and method used successfully for all.
Another interesting example of grouping children was presented in Germany, when children, as young as 10 years old, are already being separated into different schools, according to their success in school and the school you are placed in at that time mostly determines your future choices and carrier.
