EBay’s rapid growth and entrance of larger companies increased current customers’ dissatisfaction because the company was abandoning its traditional customer base, community values and culture established through many years. This led to erosion of one of the company’s key competencies, the sense of community that helped gain eBay’s position in the market.
Too fast company’s expansion may erode its core business model and put it in direct competition with more powerful rivals.
EBay is the largest and still growing (online auction sites in 2001 increased by 49% from preceding year, users- 53%, sales- 58%, and auctions listed- 63%) company providing online auction services. Founder Omidyar conceived eBay as a democratized, efficient online marketplace with high inner culture. EBay established business model a person-to-person trading community where customers could rapidly and conveniently exchange info and goods.
Current Strategy
Six strategic objectives in 1999:
1. Strengthening eBay brand;
2. Promoting new product categories and services for specific regions;
3. Increasing community trust and safety;
4. Introducing of personalization features;
5. Expanding pre- and post-trade value- added services;
6. Developing international markets;
Strategy implementation in 2002:
1. As eBay introduced many new products, it developed new product categories, introduced specialty sites, and developed eBay stores.
2. In order to, increase the trust within community eBay created University in 2000. University personnel moved from place to place within the country, holding two-day seminars. These courses attracted 500 new people, not counting the amount of them attracted by offering an online version of the classes. EBay invested a lot of money in new training facilities in 2005. In order to decrease the fail to deliver payment on a completed auction or pirated goods, eBay implied SafeHarbor program, policies, VeRO (antipiracy program).
3. Introduced About Me service, which allowed users to create their homepages viewed by all members, this led to warmth relationship inside the community.
