World War 1, also known as a Great War. It was a world conflict lasting from 1914 to 1919, with the fighting lasting until 1918. The war was fought by the Allies on one side and the Central Powers on the other. Allies where the countries like Russia, France and Britain on other side were Central Powers, Germany and Austria-Hungary. The causes of World War 1 can be divided into two sets, its short term causes and long term causes.
There were many long term causes. Balkans is one of the long term causes. Turkey as well known as the Ottomans Empire in nineteenth century became very weak. Slav people living in the Balkans gradually banished Turkey out of the Balkans. New countries like Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania were set up. Austria-Hungary were multi national country. In Austria-Hungary there were many Serbian people. This was a bad news for the empire. Austria-Hungary was scared that Slavs living in Bosnia and other Balkan States within the Austrian-Hungarian Empire would break away and join Serbia. This would mean the collapse of the Empire. To avoid this, Austria-Hungary wanted to control the Balkans. Austria-Hungary was not the only one country which were interested in Balkans. Other countries like Germany and Russia had their interests there too. Balkans would be a useful for Germany because of the place where it was located. Why? Germany needed oil for their industry. The Kaiser wanted to build a railway through the Balkans to Baghdad where there were rich oil fields, but the Germany needed Balkans to be friendly. It was very complicated because the Balkans would be very useful for Russians too.
