In the process of preparing my synopsis I have analyzed books: John B. Miner “The Management Process”, George R. Terry “Principles of Management” and Kinard “Management”.
I want to start from example of organizational change to make it easier to you to understand what exactly it is. Levi Strauss & Co., a name that has meant quality and durability for more than a hundred years. It produced the single garment that was worn by construction workers and this trend alike – simple blue jeans. And when fashion came and the names like Calvin Klein became household names, the Levi Strauss was caught unprepared, because new brands offered fashionable and sex appeal clothes that grabbed buyers’ attention and they turned away from Levi.
But consumer tastes were not the only reason for Levi Strauss’s problems. Because of the strong U.S. dollar, it made foreign markets tough enough to penetrate.
And when the managers understood all the situations, Levi Strauss did go through some huge changes. Managers were relocated from the central headquarters to the low-rent sections of the city and given the opportunity and also the financial backing for creating a youth fashion apparel business. Also the company spent huge money on advertising, introduced new lines of merchandise and tried to crack new markets that have been dominated by the fashion apparel firms. The company changes were designed to make it more competitive in the market.
Like most companies, Levi Strauss began to change only when outside pressure forced it to take some kind of action. Such action, known as reactive change, usually is taken only after crises have developed.
