Surrogacy

Many couples in the United States struggle to have their own babies. It might be caused by female or male infertility, or other medical issues that may make the pregnancy or baby delivery risky or even impossible. Luckily, these couples have a way to raise their own biological child through the process called surrogacy. Although surrogacy is an alternative way of having own child, it can also be an emotionally and legally complex process.
Surrogacy is a process where a woman carries and delivers a baby for another couple. There are two types of surrogacies today. If a surrogate woman uses her own egg to conceive a child, such a surrogacy is called traditional. She is impregnated using the intended father's sperm. In a traditional surrogacy the carrier woman is the child's biological mother. This method is much more financially affordable for people. It is also the oldest method that starts back as far as the bible, and has been practices in different ancient cultures.
Another type is called a gestational surrogacy. It allows couples to conceive their own child, thus this method is becoming more popular: “Surrogacy agencies report that the numbers have shifted markedly away from traditional surrogacies toward gestational surrogacies” (Kuczynski). In this process an egg is retrieved from the intended mother and impregnated with the intended father's sperm. After an embryo forms, it is implanted into the surrogate uterus. If parents cannot produce viable egg or sperm, sometimes donors can be used. Because of its complexity, this process is much more financially expensive and can be out of reach for many intended couples. Although any surrogacy is a complicated process, both types are considered to be as safe as a traditional pregnancy.
