NATO treaty organization

March 29, 2004 – it’s the date that has significantly marked the history of Lithuania. It’s a day, when our country became the member of NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Even though some people are sceptic about the membership, most of the citizens are joyful. Politicians are presenting greeting speeches, festal ceremonies are being held and the name of Lithuania is appearing in the media around the world.
We are now included in the alliance of 26 countries. The original signers of treaty were Portugal, France, Luxembourg, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Canada and the United States. Then, Greece and Turkey, West Germany and Spain were admitted and later the countries Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic joined. The last expansion occurred only some days ago, when Lithuania together with Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia formally became a member of NATO by depositing their instruments of accession with the United States Government.

Members agree that an armed attack against one shall be considered an attack against them all, and that they will come to the aid of each other.
The main law is the The North Atlantic Treaty, which consists of a preamble and 14 articles. In accordance with the Treaty, the fundamental role of NATO is to safeguard the freedom and security of its member countries by political and military means.
