Was the Treaty of Versailles Fair or Unfair?

The Treaty of Versailles was the principal treaty produced by the Paris Peace Conference and signed by Germany and the Allied Nations on June 28, 1919, thus ending World War One. Nonetheless, the Treaty of Versailles is one of the most contentious peace treaties in history, with the question of whether it was fair or unfair still resonating in modern society. However, if the treaty in and of itself was as vindictive as its reputation suggests, the Entente could have given Poland considerably more of eastern Germany. Furthermore, the Entente abstained from disintegrating Germany, as they had precedent for doing with Austria or the Ottomans. The only point where the treaty was practically unfair was when it imposed an army limit of about 100,000 soldiers on Germany, effectively rendering them defenceless; no country surrounded by larger armies would ever accept that at the time; nearly every peacetime standing army in the Entente countries was as large or several times larger. Some say that the treaty's so-called "war guilt" clause, which obliged Germany to accept full responsibility for World War I and resulted in reparation payments to Allied states, was inherently unfair.
