Man Ray

Man Ray was born in 1890 in Russian- Jewish immigrant family. He was an American artist who spent most of his career in Paris. Best known in the art world for his avant-garde photography, he was also known as the master of portrait and fashion photography, a painter, filmmaker, designer, philosopher, object- maker and a leader of American modernism. For him all artistic media were tools to be employed in the process of creating. Nevertheless, it was photography, that offered him the greatest possibilities.
His parents were tailors. Despite Man Ray's desire to disassociate himself from his family background, this experience left an enduring mark on his art. Tailor's dummies, flat irons, sewing machines, needles, pins, threads, swatches of fabric, and other items related to clothing and sewing appear at every stage of his work and in almost every medium. Art historians have also noted similarity in his collage and painting techniques to those used in making clothing.
Man Ray studied painting for four years. He was a painter of modernist intentions. His early paintings were similar to cubism.
In 1915, Man Ray had his first solo show of paintings and drawings in New York. Readying himself for that exhibition, he was dissatisfied with professional reproductions of his works. So he began to photograph his paintings himself. That’s how he made his first photographs.
Abandoning ordinary painting, Man Ray involved himself with Dada, a radical anti-art movement and started making objects. His first proto-Dada object, an assemblage titled Self-Portrait, was exhibited in 1916.

Duchamp was one of Man Ray’s greatest influences as well as a close friend and collaborator. Man Ray, like Duchamp, made "readymades"— objects selected by the artist, sometimes modified and presented as art (eg. Duchamp‘s urinal).
