Japanese in Brazil: From Meiji to modern times

In the 20th century, Japan faced with economic and social difficulties which caused the emigration of a huge number of Japanese citizens. One of the most emigrated countries was Brazil.
During the years the status of Japanese in Brazil were changing. The main reason was changing position of Japan in the global order. In the early 1900s immigrants from Japan were officially accepted by Brazilian government and treated with a certain respect. It was because Japan acquired quite a big industrial power in the global context. Japanese thought about themselves as a leading country of the world, leading in both social and political fields.1 Nonetheless, as Japan started to become more and more imperialistic country and continued its rise in the global status, Brazil saw a menace for its own culture therefore imposed certain ethnic repression against Japanese in Brazil thus causing most of Japanese to react by signifying an ultra-nationalist Japanese identity pointed against discrimination which came from Brazilian government. After the Second World War in which Japan faced the defeat, the situation changed a little bit. Japanese-Brazilians did not feel so tough repressions since Brazilian government did not feel any threat from Japan. As it is known, with the help of U.S.A Japan started to recover after the defeat and, step by step, returned to the top of strongest economic countries. The recovery of Japan’s economy let Japanese-Brazilians once again to assert their ethnic identity.
The flow of Japanese immigrants to Brazil started in the beginning of twentieth century. In the year of 1950, the second wave of immigrants reached Brazil. This was conditioned by Japanese-Brazilians descendants’ establishment in the middle and upper classes, the conditions which attracted many Japanese who were living in Japan at that time.
