J. Irving "The world according to Garp"

‘The World According to Garp’ is a novel published in 1978 by one of the most ‘bankable’ modern American novelists’ John Irving. He might be described as ‘a son of New England’ because ‘most of his novels are set in there, where Irving grew up. The book was evaluated perfectly by various viewers: ‘Nothing in contemporary fiction matches it... Irving’s blend of gravity is unique, audacious, almost blasphemous... funny and consistently wise...’ The novelist characterize the society, consolidated violence, current attitudes towards sex, marriage and parenthood, the feminist movement, and above all the delineated sexual roles. The general insight of the novel is how the personages seek for theirs own way of being and surmount the difficulties.
T.S. Garp is the only protagonist, for this reason the story is told from his point of view. So, the aim of the interpretation is to explore ‘the world according to Garp’. He is the hero who jets in not so ridiculous or even tragicomic situations: ‘He bit Bonker’s ear in memory of his own missing flesh... He bit him the four years he’d spent at Steering. (113)’ Furthermore, there are plenty of extremes in the world of the leading character. For this reason I wonder how he manages to remain optimistic in such circumstances. As far as I was capable to comprehend the novel, I affirm, that the standpoint to the relations with mother, wife, Jamesians of the main character is really strange, even pretty odd. The conflicts, issues of the outer and family are solved in an unusual way. For instance, the adultery at the Garps is rather a sharp theme, but when the spouses realise that his or her beloved have affairs with a lover (at first Garp did it three times and after some years Helen did the same once)...
