Italy is a country in southern Europe with shape of boot. She covers 301,230 sq km, including the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. The population of Italy is about 57,634,300 (as of July 2000). Italy's flag is red, white and green. The green is by the flagpole. Italy is bordered by Monaco, France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino and Vatican City. Italy mostly has a mild, Mediterranean climate. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Tyrhennian Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The country is divided into twenty administrative Regions, 103 Provinces. Italy has few natural resources such as iron, copper, tin, gold, and silver. Southern Italy grows fruits, olives and tomatoes, where irrigation is possible. Of course, Italy is known globally as one of the largest wine producers in the world. Grains, sugar beets, vegetables, fruits, olives and wine grapes are among the most important products. Italy is being separated into three parts: Northern Italy (Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, the Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria and Emilia Romagna); Central Italy (Tuscany, Umbria, Latium, the Marches, the Abruzzi, Molise and Sardinia); and Southern Italy (Campania, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily).
Italy has influenced the cultural and social development of the whole Mediterranean area, deeply influencing European culture as well. Important cultures and civilizations have existed there since prehistoric times. After Magna Graecia, the Etruscan civilization and especially the Roman Republic and Empire that dominated this part of the world for many centuries, Italy was central to European science and art during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
