The restoration of Lithuania’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1990 stimulated changes in the system of higher education, leading to an increase in the number of students, higher educational institutions and new financial mechanism development. At first, some higher education institutions were reorganized into universities, some into academies. Now higher education in Lithuanian comprises higher university education and higher non-university education.
Non-university higher education was established in 2000. The first non-university higher education institutions with the name of Kolegija were established on the basis of the former vocational colleges. The Kolegija is quite similar to university. Higher non-university education combines theoretical studies with professional practice. Studies last three to four years and after completion of the programme non-university studies graduates acquire a vocational qualification. Whereas, advanced vocational colleges, which have not been involved in the evaluation procedures, in a couple of years will be reorganized into another type of institutions.
University has become a mass phenomenon because of the rapid changes in society and technologies, emergence of new professions for which often only higher education can provide the opportunities to acquire adequate qualifications. Also Kolegija became very popular, because it qualifies particular specialists. As a result student numbers in higher education have increased.
Moreover, universities have moved to 3 tier system (except medicine). Now the higher university education system consists is based on three levels: undergraduate studies leading to a Bachelor’s degree, graduate studies leading to a Master’s degree and postgraduate studies leading to a doctorate. Undergraduate studies last four years and a Master’s degree for 2 years. Doctoral studies in Lithuania last for three or four years. Those pursuing medical education at a university continue their study in the residency.
