Giedre Raugeviciute English 102-140 FAT AND HAPPY? It seems that today obesity exceeded all limits. The prevalence of obesity is rising to epidemic proportions at an alarming rate in both developed and less developed countries around the world. The more people live better the more they spend time and money for eating. Food is everywhere. It seems ridiculous to hear that people can be hungry. They can easily get food everywhere. Schools, college, various offices and entertainment places provide excellent food services. Every restaurant and fast food places are trying to satisfy customer needs and expect them every day to come back. While being surrounded by consuming amount of food everywhere the society falls into big trouble. Too much food does not make people happier. People can not control their eating needs any more. A consuming amount of environmental changes that foster eating more frequently have occurred. The fast food industry grows incredibly fast. People get the availability of more food and that food has higher energy content. They eat and blame media which promotes snack food, they blame the restaurants locations which are always “in convenient places”. People tend to blame their family traditions to socialize with food and drink every day or friends who want to meet them in restaurant for a big lunch. Gluttony becomes uncontrollable, so people gain weight and become obese. An unbelievable amount of overweight people caused serious social and physiological problems in society. Together with health care Giedre Raugeviciute English 102-140 professionals people tend to “attack” obese society members and make them feel horrible. “If fat people are unhappy people, blame not their fat but their fellow citizens who bill them as clowns, clodhoppers, cannibals, or criminals; who spread such commercial rumors as “To be fat is the end of the life”; who sport bumper stickers on their vans, “No fat chicks”; who print posters which read, “It’s in to be thin. It’s out to be stout”, reports H. Schwartz.( 487). People create jokes and make fun of overweight ones. Magazines and newspapers illustrate the pages with fat people pictures and put sarcastic comments under it. Children make fun of their obsessed friends everywhere: at school, at the parties. Overweight children lose their self-esteem because of the people reaction. Even adults who are not childish any more; they tend to laugh at obsessed people too. It seems that society rejects overweight people all the time. M. Ally presents to society the tragedy of being fat: “I hate the “look” – you know the one I’m talking about. It’s that look that goes slowly, and usually not all that subtlety, from head to toe and back up again. That look says so much. The one that tells me I’m not normal. You see according to that look, I’m disgusting. I’m not worthy of attention, unless it’s to ridicule or insult me. That look is full of judgment, of contempt, of fear” ( 7 ). People do not think about the feelings of overweight society numbers. They laugh, hate and judge. People reject others who may have a wonderful personality, intelligence and ability to communicate. People reject those who are bigger in size. While moral and Giedre Raugeviciute English 102-140 ethical theories teach people to love others for who they are, the reality is way too different. “It’s the look I get when buy a chocolate bar or ice cream. It says “Don’t you think you’ve had enough?” or “No wonder you’re fat!” It’s the look I get every morning at the gym. It says, “Boy am I glad I’m not her! “ or “Poor dear… “It’s the look I get at the movie theater or on a plane trip. That angry, contemptful and offended glare that says, “How dare you sit next to me?” It’s the look I get from strangers on the street. It says “All that weight can’t be healthy” and “She should workout and go on diet.” Been there. Done that”, adds M. Ally and proves how hard to be overweight.(5) Who can deny that people are extremely cruel? They judge overweight society numbers without mercy. People believe that it is pretty easy to change the body lines in a couple days. The thing is that loosing weigh takes a lot of time and dedication and not every person can handle that. Parents, friends and even physicians tend to goad fat people into strict diets from which they never return. H. Schwartz states: “Dieting makes everything worse, for the chances are high that fat people will fail” (487). But overweight people starve, well, at least they try to…Trying to change their body sizes to perfect ones leads to frustration and low self- esteem. There follows a question if an overweigh person can not deal with obesity, who is responsible for that mission? "Many people believe that dealing with overweight and obesity is a personal responsibility. To some degree they are right, but it is also a community responsibility. When there are no safe, accessible places for children to play or adults to walk, jog, or ride a bike, that is a community responsibility. When school Giedre Raugeviciute English 102-140 lunchrooms or office cafeterias do not provide healthy and appealing food choices that is a community responsibility. When we do not require daily physical education in our schools that is also a community responsibility", explains Ph.D, David Satcher, M.D., former Surgeon General of the United States. (6) Scientists state that obesity is not a responsibility of overweight person. They suggest to blame on our society which promotes too much unlimited eating and does not care about the results – obesity followed by gluttony. To my mind we have to understand one simple thing, that obesity is a disease. We have to protect and treat obese people as we treat others who are ill. Obese individuals must not be the target of discrimination. They should be treated as persons with a chronic health problems and get support and treatment. The AOA (American Obesity Association) defends the rights of disabled persons with obesity and they state that obesity is the second leading cause of premature death. It also can cause many health conditions such as diabetes and coronary heart disease. They have experienced that obesity is a source of stigmatization and discrimination and can cause physical and emotional pain that can be disabling. Obesity can lead to a poor quality of life and impaired mobility also. (12) In my opinion it is not fear to pick on people who are already suffering from so many problems. Overweight individuals have an inability to fully participate in recreational activities, have an inability to perform some jobs. They also have reduced job opportunities. Obese society members have restricted opportunities for romantic Giedre Raugeviciute English 102-140 relationship too. These poor people are prejudiced and discriminated in school and at work. “Criminality and insanity seem less intransigent, less rooted than obesity”, regrets R. J. Homant (383). Fat people are not happy people! They are suffering victims of cruel society. They are victims of unfair look. I should think that not judging, but being more tolerant we could make these people’s life easier. Giedre Raugeviciute English 102-140 Works Cited Ally, Molly.
