1. Explain the difference between social class and social stratification.
3. Explain and compare the Government`s NS-SEC scale, the older Registrar General`s scale and the BBC study`s scale. Explain which you think is the most accurate way to define and measure social class. Justify your answer.
NS-SEC scale it is a scale which the UK government now uses and it is not actually looking at people`s skills level, it looks at people wages and whether you are employer or employed. It is more useful in 21st century society as some unskilled workers can get higher income then skilled workers. However it still does not recognize people who are wealthy enough not to work therefore, they could be underclassed and categorised at the same as housewives. Occupation based scales tend to divide people in middle and working classes and ignoring upper class characterised not only by occupation, but by ownership too. One more really important aspect which this scale does not look at it is gender. There is loads of higher managerial and professional jobs in which women earn less than men, but are still in the same social class.
BBC created a huge survey and a new scale for social class measurement it is known as BBC study scale and it is absolutely different from RGS and NS-SEC. It does not look at just your occupation, but also at your savings, owned property, people you know, your lifestyle and your hobbies. The BBC scale has 7 classes and it said while elite class was always there, they found that there are now new social classes based on a wider analysis of the class structure. It found that 15% of population is precariat, the poorest and most deprived grouping. (BBC. 2013)
