E. Hemingway "The sun also rises"

The following report is on the novel “The Sun Also Rises”, also known in British editions by its original title “Fiesta”, by Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway, author of “Farewell to Arms” and “Old Man and the Sea”. This is Hemingway’s first major novel, which established him as an internationally-known author after its publication in 1926. It is widely considered one of the two masterpieces of Lost Generation fiction along with “The Great Gatsby” by F. S. Fitzgerald, who is thought to have helped Hemingway in his numerous revisions of the book. Hemingway conceived the idea while attending the Fiesta de San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. All the characters have real-life prototypes, and the novel could be regarded as a keen social observation.
One of the major themes of the book is the Lost Generation, to which all of the characters belong. This is a term used for the generation of young people coming of age in the United States during and shortly after World War I. The war undercut traditional notions of morality, faith, and justice. No longer able to rely on the traditional beliefs that gave life meaning, the characters are psychologically and morally lost, and indulge in escapist activities to give their otherwise aimless lives a likeness of meaning. All of the characters relate to life and other people through a constantly drunken prism of pain and disappointment. Even travel for them is a mere excuse to drink. Never throughout the novel does Hemingway openly state his critical view of the superficial and empty attitudes of the Lost Generation, but the way he portrays them is a clear display of his discouragement. However, the second epigraph, quoting Ecclesiastes, expresses the author’s hope that future generations may rediscover themselves.
