E. Hemingway "For Whom the Bell Tolls "

 Ernest Hemingway maintains a reputation as one of the most innovative and influential authors of the 20th C. He showed an early talent in writing that he honed through work on his high school’s literary magazine and student newspaper, and later he started his professional writing career as a reporter. Hemingway is particularly known for his novels, in which he portrays a certain type of hero, termed a code hero, who struggles against death and obliteration, though he knows that he will ultimately lose the struggle. Besides, the writer is also famous for his journalistic prose style. His writing is succinct and direct, although his speakers tend to give the impression that they are leaving a tremendous amount unsaid. However, exactly this bold experimentation with prose earned Hemingway the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes for Literature for his most popular work, the novella The Old Man and the Sea. The writer’s other literary masterpieces, which were greatly influenced by Irish writer James Joyce and American writers Scott Fitzgerald and especially Gertrude Stein, include the works such as The Sun Also Rises, Death in the Afternoon and For Whom the Bell Tolls. As For Whom the Bell Tolls is a famous Hemingway’s work for his personal strong feelings expressed about the war, I have also decided to speak about the possible themes related to war in the novel. So there are 3 major themes in the novel: the loss of innocence in war, the value of human life and romantic love as salvation.
