A. Miller "The Crucible"

 Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible was written as a critique to the social events that were happening in McCarthy era in the United States. The play so precisely reflects the political atmosphere of 1952 so precisely, that most of the critics of that time were afraid to draw the parallel. However, the parallel was and is very clear; therefore, the author was called to testify and convicted for contempt of Congress. Nevertheless, Arthur Miller’s play is one of the most popular plays and “remains as a political barometer for unrest in many foreign countries.” (Lauter, 2025) Here he unpacks interesting reasons, which caused social behaviors in both decades: witch hunt and McCarthy era. The fear of strangers and private interests were always the main stimulus of absurd victimization and disregard for human rights in both witch hunt and McCarthism persecutions. Moreover, as a “political barometer” The Crucible seems to indicate some problems in present condition of U.S. society and politics.
In the first pages of his play Arthur Miller introduces social order and relationships according to which the society of Salem lived: “Simply, it was this: for good purposes, even high purposes, the people of Salem developed a theocracy, a combine of state and religious power whose function was to keep the community together, and to prevent any kind of disunity that might open it to destruction by material or ideological enemies.” (2028). This quotation is the best example of the fear of strangers, someone or something from outside, that might threaten the society from within. The same concept is pointed out by the Ellen Schrecker in her article “The growth of the Anti-Communist Network” which discuses the political and social issues in McCarthy era.
