Welfare policy in Flanders and Lithuania

I have chosen and decided to write and to discuss about unemployment benefits and maternity benefits. I have chosen these two sectors because in a face of crisis Lithuania, and I think almost all countries of Europe, had a lot of problems and had to change not only economical politic, but also the policy of social security. So I have chosen unemployment as a biggest “wound“ of our society as a result of crisis. And I have chosen the maternity benefits to talk about, because this sector was also touched by crisis, because the government had to cut the payments for mothers, because of the crisis.
It is very interesting to compare these two sectors for the country as Lithuania, which already had a bankrupt, and such a region as Flanders, that also faced a crisis, but not so painful. It is interesting to compare, how such a different countries are organizing the same sectors in the same influence of crisis.
Why maternity benefits? Because in the middle of summer of 2010, the government passed the law to cut the payments for mothers (or parents) growing up their children. It was the step that was influenced by crisis, because the government needs to save money in national budget. As a result of that, all Lithuanian society was resentenced and angry. There was general scandal in all country. Television, radio, internet, even public places were full of complacency because of that. People couldn’t understand this action of government, how can it damage the most fragile sector of society- mother and child. They were going to the streets, rallied for strikes and so on.
