Types of Offshore Units

The oil industry is divided into two distinct sectors. “Exploration” & “Production”. The type of vessel you will be employed on will be mostly in the Exploration sector of the industry. Below you will find a more detailed description of the types of vessels, each with their own individual characteristics.
The one factor which governs the Exploration side of the industry, more than the Production side of the industry is mobility. So you will normally find yourself working on a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit or MODU for short.
MODU configurations are Jack-up, Semi-submersibles and Drill ships. The task of these vessels is to locate oil in various depths of water. A Jack-up can only drill relatively shallow waters (400 feet) as it stands on the sea bed and is like a fixed platform while in its drilling mode, so the depth of water that each Jack-up can work in is governed by the size of its legs. A Semi-submersible can drill in deeper waters and is held in position by a series of anchors which are lade out in a pattern approximately 1 mile from the Semi-submersible which keeps it in position. Then a Drill ship in very deep waters. These vessels use dynamic positioning to keep it on station; to allow drilling operations to be carried out.
You will find that Jack-up drilling rigs are the most common type of vessel that you will be working on. These vessels drill a majority of the offshore wells around the world. But as the search for oil is never ending; and most of the shallow waters around the globe have been, or are being explored at the moment. The search for oil is moving into the deeper waters every year. Which means that Semi-Submersibles will be playing a major part in the oil industry...
