The basic types of the genre of the novel

Novels can be classified into dozens of genres. In this work I would like to discuss a few broad genres of the novel that reflect some general tendencies. Such genres are: social, psychological, education, philosophical, popular and experimental novels.
I would like to start with the social novel, it focuses on the behavior of characters and how the characters’ actions reflect or contradict the values of their society. The social novel includes two major types: the novel of manners and the chronicle novel. The novel of manners focuses on a small segment of society. The chronicle novel paints a broad survey of society as a whole. In both types, the characters’ external conflicts and interactions with others are the lifeblood of the story.
Talking about the psychological novel, its intent is to reveal its characters’ inner selves at a particular time in life. Psychological novels give the reader direct access to the inner thoughts of characters. Literary techniques that are usually used for that are interior monologue and stream of consciousness. One famous example of a psychological novel is The Catcher in the Rye by American writer J. D. Salinger.
What about the education novel, it describes stages in the life of its main character as the individual develops as a person. For example, in Great Expectations (1860-1861), English author Charles Dickens describes a boy named Pip as he grows up and the challenges he faces as he comes to terms with...
