Introduction
It is well – known, that noun, in linguistics, is a member of a large, open lexical category whose members can occur as the main word in the subject of a clause, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition. In traditional English grammar, the noun is one of the eight parts of speech.(see )
The aim of the present paper is to analyse proper nouns, and their usage in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” by Joanne Kathleen Rowling.
The objectives of the present study are:
1. to collect and explicate the examples drawn from “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” by J.K. Rowling.
2. to classify proper nouns into the following groups:
◦ proper nouns with the article THE
◦ proper nouns without the article THE
3. to classify proper nouns according to some definite semantic group.
4. to analyse the rendering of the above mentioned proper nouns into Lithuanian.
The methods applied to the present study are descriptive and statistical. By means of descriptive method, the collected examples were classified and described. By means of statistical method the relative frequency of the proper nouns was shown.
The scope is 200 examples, drawn from the above mentioned book.
