THE CURONIAN SPIT
The legend of Neringa elecidates, that in ancient times the king of the island Karvaitis had giant daugther Neringa. Once god Bangpūtis got angry with fishers. The sea was stormy, wawes was huge. Neringa started to resque fishers, she scatter sand to the sea. Where sand fell, there rose a dune. The spit stretched away the coast. That spit fishers called Neringa. “Neringe” is a word of German origin meaning a long and narrow strip of sandy land.
The Curonian Spit combines the settlement of Juodkrantė, Nida, Pervalka, Preila and Smiltynė. The Curonian Spit is the peninsula divinding the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The Northern part, which is the biggest part of the Curonian Spit, belongs to the Republic of Lithuania. The remaining part, which includes the settlements of Pilkopa, Rasytė, Šarkuva and several others, belongs to the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation. In 1923 the Northern part of the Curonian Spit (the area of 52 km in lengh) was assigned to the Republic of Lithuania. From 1939 until 1945 the entire area of the Spit was a property of Germany. The Northern part of the peninsula was given back to Lithuania after World War II. At present, the Lithuanian part of the Spit (800 ha) is administrated by Klaipeda City Municipality; whereas the remaining part (about 25,600 ha) is subordinate to the Municipality of Neringa City.
