Systemic social work with children in South Africa

Relevance of the topic. South Africa is an amazing country which unifies a beautiful landscape and many different cultures unified in the ˏrainbow nation´. The country has many different challenges in different categories to struggle. These drastic facts make it necessary to have many children´s homes like the Greytown Child and Youth Care Centre in the East of South Africa (KwaZulu Natal). This children´s home was founded 1919 and takes care of 160 children at the age of three to 18 years. There are seven different houses divided into age groups and gender. Every child gets social support from one of the three fulltime social workers. Many children live in the home because of experienced traumas due to neglection, physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse. Another challenge is a bad health condition of some children because of HIV or epilepsy.
This article is about the presentation of the social work in South Africa. First of all, the necessary aspects of the country are explained that form the reason of the foundation of a social work in South Africa. For that the historical, cultural, political, economic and other aspects about the country are described. Then the structure of the social work further explained and presented with a typical case. For a view into the case study the girl was described, and her behaviour was analysed. After that a chosen intervention is planned, accomplished and evaluated.
