This report, reports on the interlink between physical activity and mental health.
In this report, I have included the local, national, and international literature on the topic, relevant theoretical frameworks, and policies. I have also included all types of studies. The literature is no older than 10 years to ensure validity (Pautasso, 2013). The keywords have been used as follows: Mental health, Physical health, Impact, Inequalities, Social health determinates, Interlink, Inactivity, and Relationship Between Mental and Physical Health. This report aims to critically analyse and evaluate the competing and conflicting values, beliefs and dilemmas associated with physical activity and mental health, including local, national, and international perspectives. As well as critically analyse and evaluate how different perspectives of inactivity and poor mental health can impact individuals as well as the community.
There is a fundamental connection between mental and physical health. As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO, 2020). World Health Organisation argues that in the absence of physical health problems, mental health problems are significantly more likely to occur. It is estimated that the UK's population is approximately 20% less active than it was in the 1960s, and that this number will fall to approximately 35% by 2030 if current trends continue (Public Health England, 2022). Moreover, there are 1 in 6 deaths in the UK associated with inactivity, and it costs £7.4 billion annually (including £0.9 billion to the NHS alone) (Public Health England, 2022). Besides, medically unexplained physical symptoms often have a basis in poor mental health and are estimated to cost the NHS £12.5 billion a year, and nearly £118 billion is lost in output...
