Pre-school education in Lithuania

The current system of secondary education is comprised of primary school (1st to 4th forms), basic school (5th to 10th forms), general education secondary school (1st to 12th forms) and 4 years of gymnasium corresponding to the 9th to 12th forms of secondary school. There are also special education institutions for children and adults with special needs.
But the first step is pre-school education where children come to play and learn a lot of things. According to the Law on Education of Lithuania, children under the age of seven are permitted to enroll in nursery school and kindergarten upon the request of the parent or guardian, whereas orphans and neglected children are enrolled in childcare institutions. Lithuania encourages education in the home for children under the age of seven and provides benefits to those who comply through methodological, diagnostic, and consultation assistance. The pre-primary education is designed to assist a child to prepare for school and to equalize the level of knowledge of all preschool pupils. The curriculum of this stage can be offered at schools of general education or by other education providers.
Children come to play, meet other children, learn basic reading, writing or arithmetic skills. The children's main methods of learning are through example, experience, activity, and direct contact. One teacher generally teaches all the basic subjects. The pre-primary education is designed to assist a child to prepare for school and to equalize the level of knowledge of all preschool pupils. None of the stages of pre-school education are mandatory. Parents who decide to educate their children at home may receive pedagogical and psychological assistance.
