O. Wilde "Importance of being Earnest"

In this well known play Oscar Wilde stresses the fact that being “earnest” is a very important value, this idea is very well employed in the name of the play. But why is it so important to be earnest? Is it because you can get a woman, which likes your name particularly, or is it because by being earnest you can be accepted to a new society? What effect does living a double life bring to the play and to the lives of the characters? Through a comical yet a satirizing way, Oscar Wilde portrays the true values of being “earnest”.
First of all, the name Earnest stands for the seriousness and sincerity. In this play, Jack tries to act up a fictional character, his brother, giving him the name Ernest, while to his luck he realizes that Gwendolen is in fact in love with the name not necessarily the personality, as she makes clear she would not consider marrying a man whose name wasn’t Ernest. Later in the play his friend Algernon is acting as Ernest, realizing he’s made Cecily, love of his life, fall in love with him.
Although Algernon also realizes that much of the attention he’s getting from Cecily is just because of his fictional character name – Ernest. All through the play characters like Jack and Algernon try to cover up their true faces and utilize “earnest” person, pretending they’re someone that they wish to be at a time. This shows that instead of being themselves, and maybe trying to achieve some of the earnestness, these characters pretend to be somebody else, therefore, by doing that they would achieve their goals, making their lives easier, but at the same time more complicated.
