The sun rises up from the coast once again. For most people, this sight isn‘t special but for the villagers of this little rural area of Šiauliai, it was the most peaceful moment of their day. No military, no fear – only the birds singing the melancholic song of an once again occupied country. Even the birds could have their own language – no one told them to sing in Russian – thought Tadas, a typical lithuanian teenager of the 19th century.
If you take a closer look, he wasn’t so typical after all – his drawers were full of Lithuanian poems and sonets, the closet was stuffed with illegal Lithuanian books, which he smuggled in while his parents were working at the farm. The parents were very friendly with the Russian gendarmes, so fully fed up with the russification propaganda, they didn’t even notice the nostalgic melodies of a free Lithuania Tadas sang every night.
Similarly, to the boy, this morning wasn’t any less typical at first, but then Tadas decided it was time to make a difference – he had to join the ‘’book smugglers’’. It was a group of patriotic men, who smuggled forbidden Lithuanian literature to other Lithuanian-speaking areas of the Russian empire, with the intention of keeping the language alive, due to the Lithuanian press ban.
