Comparing cultural differences in business between Canada and China

Today I will be comparing cultural differences in business between Canada and China. These two countries have vastly different work ethics. Chinese culture has so many rituals and little details to consider before doing business with this country. Canada is a western country and it’s practices in a corporate environment are much more usual in our eyes.

Meeting and greeting

First of all age and rank are highly respected in Chinese culture. In China, people enter a meeting in order of importance, the highest-ranking person arriving first, and so on. The same goes for introductions. It is important to greet those that are older than you first. You are expected to greet everyone in the room individually, even if the group is large. Chinese colleagues may applaud when you are introduced as a way of greeting you and showing approval. If so, it is appropriate to applaud back.

Handshakes are a standard, casual greeting. However, in formal situations people usually bow slightly. If the person you are meeting has a higher status, you should bow lower.

While it is the norm for Canadians to refer to the superiors by Mr. or Mrs. it is unacceptable in China. Every rank has a certain title and forgetting to refer to superior by their title may result in loss of face. “Face” is an important concept in Chinese culture. The concept of face is basically our word for reputation. If you disrespect the Chinese superior or other partners, you damage your reputation.

Although Chinese people themselves may be late, make sure that you are punctual. They will find it disrespectful. Allow a 10-minute interval for others to arrive and give yourself time to greet everyone.

Communication

China is a high context culture; Canada is a low context culture.

Canadians are very direct - everything you want to say is in your words. What they say is what they mean.
