• DNA is the instruction manual for life.
• It has the same structure in any organism.
• The structure of DNA was first worked out in 1953 by Watson and Crick.
• They identified the now famous ‘double helix’.
• It then took a further 50 years to map the entire human genome.
DNA Monomers
DNA is made up of monomers called nucleotides.
Each nucleotide contains:
1. A Phosphate group 2. A Sugar (deoxyribose) 3. A Base

The Double helix
• DNA is made up of 2 polynucleotide strands spiralled together.
• The sugar and phosphate groups form the backbone of DNA.
• Bases come out from the backbone to form the steps of the DNA ladder.
• Hydrogen bonds between bases on opposing strands hold the polynucleotide strands together.
