• Transparent wood is novel wood material which has up to 90% transparency and higher mechanical properties than wood itself, made for the first time in 1992.

• Transparent wood is one of the innovative construction materials that hold the potential to lift the construction sector to a whole new level. Not only is it environmentally-friendly, but also a great alternative to plastic and glass.

• To produce it, the team headed by the researcher, Céline Montanari, has removed the lignin from the wood, the main light-absorbing component in wood, and then add acrylic components to it during a subsequent phase. The result is a new frosted and almost transparent material, strong enough to be used in construction.

• The technique that is used to produce transparent wood is similar to chemical pulping:
◦ Place wood blocks in boiled water and sodium hydroxide for two hours. This would leach out polymer called lignin (it gives wood its color) in the wood.
◦ Then, the wood is soaked with an epoxy which not only strengthens the wood but also turns it clear.
Physical properties
• Properties of transparent wood are strongly dependent on wood properties:
◦ Low density compared to glass (from 1200 kg/m3)
◦ High optical transmittance
◦ Low thermal conductivity
◦ Outstanding toughness
Physical properties
• Transparent – it transmits 85% light. It isn't crystal clear, but hazy. In addition to affording a measure of privacy to people inside buildings made of transparent wood, the haziness means the material traps some light.
• Wood has lower thermal conductivity which would help to keep a building at more consistent temperature and make it easier to reach higher energy efficiency.
• Shatterproof
• Biodegradable
• Stronger than glass and plastic .
